Along with nearly 30 freshman Members of Congress, I joined in sending a letter to all Republican presidential candidates urging them to support our efforts to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment.
The letter, sent to the presidential contenders this week, notes that, “one of the primary threats to our freedoms and way of life is the smothering $19 trillion national debt. For decades, reckless spending and borrowing by Washington politicians and bureaucrats has created this growing fiscal monster.”
“Washington desperately needs fiscal discipline not only in Congress but also in the White House. Our next President will have tremendous influence over the fiscal health of our federal government. That, in turn, will impact economic growth, job creation, and our national defense.”
This chaotic presidential election has been marked by widely shared voter frustration with Washington and campaign themes centered on challenging the status quo. As this election progresses, it is critical that we make the candidates focus on important issues facing the nation.
In the next six years, just the interest on our national debt, not the principle, will cost more than we spend on our military. It will only worsen from there.
Rather than allowing this presidential election to spiral into personal attacks and one-liners, we need to demand commitments. We must refocus on eliminating wasteful federal government spending and paying off the growing national debt.
Our nation is on the wrong track - our next president must work with Congress to steer America in a new, fiscally-sound direction.
